“Afghan govt. provides ground for int’l, regional & national consensus to ensure peace,” President Ghani

KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met with US Central Command Commander Gen. Joseph Votel here at the presidential palace on Monday, the president press office said in a statement.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged view on ensuring security of elections, intra-Afghan peace talks, equipping and strengthening of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces and joint fighting against terrorism, according to the statement.
Both sides also called US strategy for Afghanistan and south Asia as successful, the statement added.
Praising reforms within security and defensive entities and the Afghan government achievements, the US general expressed hope for continued process of reforms, the statement went on to say.
While supporting government plans, Gen. Votel assured of his country’s continued cooperation with the government and people of Afghanistan, the statement continued.
Expressing gratitude over US assistances in different sections, President Ghani added that the U.S. has provided the ground for positive changes in Afghanistan, south Asia and region, hoping the regional countries play their role in implementation of the strategy and peace process.
The president pointed out that the government of Afghanistan along with its main achievements in different areas, has provided the ground for national, regional and international consensus to ensure peace across the country.
He added the recent ceasefire indicated that the people and Taliban have been sick of war and want a lasting peace to be prevailed in the country.
