NATO officials while declaring their support from Afghan National Defense and Security Forces stressed that the organization had to be ready to deploy forces in combat missions if needed.
In his recent remarks at a Town Hall event of the University of Ottawa in Canada, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said: “So therefore yes, NATO and its allies have to be ready to deploy forces in combat missions if needed, but its more viable, more effective and more sustainable if you can enable countries, in the Middle East, In North Africa, in Afghanistan, to stabilize their own countries themselves.”
Stressing on strengthening and further assisting the Afghan national defense and security forces, Stoltenberg added NATO troops were doing training, assist, advise the Afghan troops and it was a big achievement that NATO and its allies had enabled the Afghan troops, the Afghan national security forces, to be responsible for security in their own country, insisting that NATO should do more of that.
Meanwhile, a number of political and military experts and Afghan citizens in their interview with The Kabul Times correspondent believe that stability will not be maintained in Afghanistan until terrorists safe havens and training centers are not destroyed beyond Afghan borders. They also asked for renewing counter terrorism strategy. Sahib Nazar Muradi, an Afghan political expert, says current strategy on counter terrorist effort is focused on wrong geography, so the strategy has somehow failed to bring stability in the region. He stressed that concentration should be paid to terrorists safe havens and training centers where they were funded, supported and logistically aided. “Afghanistan government is not able to lonely follow counter terrorism effort as war on terrorism needs world determination. Now, it is time that NATO and the international community should focus on terrorists safe havens and training centers and fully support Afghanistan in counter terrorism effort,” Muradi added. Amir Mohammad, another Afghan military and political expert also by stressing on targeting terrorist safe havens and training centers beyond Afghanistan borders said security would not be maintained in the region in particular Afghanistan until necessary measures were not taken against resources that were funding and equipping terrorist groups.
Meanwhile, Afghan ordinary citizens also in their interviews with The Kabul Times correspondent asked the international community not to leave Afghanistan lonely and further support and equip ANDSF so they could independently lead war on terrorism in their country.  “In their new mission in Afghanistan, US and NATO member countries should further focus on training, advising and equipping Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) as terrorist groups are seriously threatening not only Afghanistan but also the region and world,” said Mohammad Zaman, an Afghan citizen. it is worth mentioning that US and NATO member countries’ mission in Afghanistan cost billions dollar and nearly 4500 foreign troops have been killed and injured in the past 16 years, but terrorism is still threatening not only Afghanistan but the region and world.
