Nangarhar’s security situation intolerable, Dr. Abdullah

KABUL: A number of youth and civil society activists from Nangarhar province called on Chief Executive (CE)Dr. Abdullah Abdullah here on Thursday and discussed security of the province, a statement from the CE office said
The youth and the activists shared their concerns about their province’s security situation with Dr. Abdullah and said the province might plunge deeper into crisis if necessary measures were not taken on time. They asked increase in police strength, disarmament of all illegal armed groups, elimination of corruption, appointment of qualified persons and developing a practical and serious plan for improving security of Nangarhar.
They also requested the Chief Executive to visit Nangarhar for assessing its security and making a plan for improving the situation there.
Meanwhile Dr. Abdullah said the security situation in Nangarhar was seriously concerning, something he called unacceptable. He said the entire government was responsible for the worsening of security situation in Nangarhar. However, he said the issue had been discussed with relevant officials and the National Security Council (NSC) would take a decision in its next meeting.
The CE said the presence of illegal armed groups in Nangarhar posed security threat and they would not be allowed to disrupt the security situation, adding the main stronghold of Islamic State (IS) or Daesh was destroyed in the north of the country but the group still had presence in Nangarhar.
“New measures would help resolve this problem to the most extent and improve security in Jalalabad,” he concluded.
