New military strategy to target Taliban key commanders underway

Clashes between Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) and Taliban fighters have increased in recent days. Afghan senior military officials say targeting key commanders and leaders of the Taliban group in various provinces of the country is part of their new military strategy. According to Afghan military officials, Afghan defense and security and US-led NATO forces have planned a strategy for targeting Taliban’s key commanders so that ways can be paved for peace talks between Afghanistan government and the Taliban group.
Deputy of Afghanistan army chief of staff has said armed insurgents have lost their capabilities and combat initiatives in battlefields, adding that a number of top figures and commanders of the Taliban group have been killed in recent military operations conducted by Afghan and US forces in various parts of the country.
According to deputy of Afghanistan army chief of staff and acting commander of 205th Corps Gen. Abdul Hamid Hamid, ANDSF and US forces are seriously following the new military strategy in which top figures and commanders of the insurgent group are targeted and killed in various provinces of the country.
“We’re targeting Taliban’s key leaders and commanders as we’ve targeted their senior commander in Kunduz as well as in Baghlan in recent days. We’ve targeted Taliban’s so-called governor for Kunduz, the group’s so-called deputy governor for Urzgan as well as their so-called governor for Helmand,” Gen. Hamid said.
During the past one week, Helmand local officals have claimed that ANDSF have taken full control of Babaji in Helmand where Taliban fighters have sustained heavy casualties and lost their capabilities in fighting the Afghan forces.
It is reported that a number of the group’s key figures and leaders have escaped to Pakistan after ANDSF and US forces have intensified their pressures on the group in various parts of the country. The armed Taliban group had planned to capture two provinces in the country’s south and some districts, but they have failed to do so as ANDSF have now full capabilities to fail their plans and plots.
Taliban has said nothing regarding their casualties suffered in recent weeks so far, but Afghan military officials say the group has lost most of their income resources in the country’s south. Afghan defense and security forces and US-led NATO forces have recently increased their military pressures on the Taliban group so that the group could get ready for peace talks with Afghanistan government.
Increasing of war against armed Taliban insurgents and targeting the group’s key figures and commanders have come amid peace efforts that are underway in national and international level as official meetings between US officials and representatives of armed Taliban group have entered to unprecedented stage. During the past few months, US special envoy to Afghanistan on peace and reconciliation has visited Afghanistan and regional countries three times so far.
During his 18-day visit to the region, US special envoy to Afghanistan on peace and reconciliation has paid visit to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Uzbekistan and Belgium and plans to visit Qatar and UAE in coming days.
In battlefield, Taliban commanders are the biggest obstacle for peace talks with Afghanistan government as they believe they are about to win the war against foreign troops and Afghan forces.
