Chief Executive Office statement

At the very beginning of Jaddi 1380, (coinciding December 22, 2001), Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani, President of the then Islamic State and leader of Jihad and Resistance, peacefully handed over power to Hamid Karzai, President of the then transitional government for the first time.
The peaceful handover of power in the temporal history of Afghanistan, under which, replacements in the political leadership, have been simultaneous with war and carnage, was an unprecedented and exceptional step.
Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani, by handing over power, took first step in the foundation of a democratic system and showed that his and his colleagues’ campaigns in the course of jihad and resistance, were not for power but for freedom, dignity and pride of Afghanistan.
Shaheed Prof. Rabbani, not only paved the way for peaceful transition of power and didn’t hesitate to do more for strengthening democracy, ensuring justice and equality, rule of law and a sustainable and a political system based on the people verdicts.
In fact, the current political system in Afghanistan and the last 17 years’ achievements, is the results of efforts, devotion, patience and sacrifices of the those like Shaheed Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani and Shaheed Ahmad Shah Massoud, the country’s National Hero and we, as their followers, are planned and committed to protect and safeguard their efforts and sacrifices.
Dr. Abdullah Abdullah
Chief Executive of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan
