Balkh ready to host thousands of people for Nowruz celebration

KABUL: Officials in northern Balkh province saying the annual festival marking the start of the Afghan solar year would be traditionally marked in Mazar-i-Sharif by tens of thousands of people from different parts of the country.
Mazar-i-Sharif mayor Abdul Haq Khurami told The Kabul Times that the city was ready to host guests and the Municipality had spared no effort to keep the city clean for the festival.
“We are working hard till 12 at night to clean and decorate the city for Nowruz celebration. We have already kicked off the drive for cleaning of the areas around Hazrat Ali Shrine and would continue our works till first day of the new year,” Khurami said, adding they have established for the first time the municipality police to work for the civil order and collect the taxes. Meanwhile provincial spokesman said that preparations were underway since last three months and commission led by the governor working hard to gloriously celebrate the first day of the new solar year in the province.
“Cultural programs, including music festival, concerts, poetry contest and different events planned to mark the beginning of spring and Nowruz in the ancient Balkh province,” provincial spokesman Munir Ahmad Farhad said, adding hundred thousand of people expected to attend the festival in the province. He assured residents that much better security arrangements had been taken this year. Participants should not worry about their security, he said, asserting their readiness to deal with any eventuality.
