Unified delegation for peace talks

Showing its commitment for peace and stability in the country, the national unity government formed the reconciliation council, aiming to ease peace talks and end 18 years of war and bloodshed in the country.
In recent months, government’s efforts and steps taken by the regional countries and that of US have fostered renewed hope that a political settlement with the Taliban could be reached, bringing an end to the suffering of Afghan people. For years, the peace process has not been succeeded to make any headway as Taliban have made contradictory demands from both the Afghan government and the US.
After criticisms made inside and outside of Afghanistan over the government peace negotiating team with Taliban, government announced that was committed to people’s demand and working on an inclusive negotiating team to represent all strata of the society.
Therefore, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Sunday chaired the meeting of the High Reconciliation Council about appointing members of the Peace Negotiating Team and participants of the Qatar talks as well agenda of the event. The meeting organized at the palace was attended by government leaders, a number of former jihadi faces, traders’ representatives and women.
President Ghani, while inaugurating the body’s first meeting, said the council was created after two months of consultations with figures involved in the peace process. “It is a pride moment when government leaders, politicians and jihadi figures have come together to advance the peace process under a framework of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, we will make important decisions for the future of Afghanistan by forming the peace negotiating team,” he said.
Indeed, peace, which is the only wish of the war-suffered Afghan nation, should be achieved through an intra-Afghan dialogue and the Taliban, if want to give up arm and work for the country’s national interests, should join the direct talks with the elected system, as the main representative of the people. The group shouldn’t obey or hold meetings with those countries seeking their own interests in a destabilized Afghanistan.
Neither the government of Afghanistan nor the people of are willing to have a peace talk with the meddling of other countries and in the direction of the aliens, but the international and strategic partners like US that have so far provided aids, cooperation and other means for the Afghan people, even they have supported the country’s security and defense forces during the years of counter-terrorism conflicts.
Meanwhile the country’s partners shouldn’t turn a blind eye towards Afghan people and government in such destiny-making meetings. They are required to honestly cooperate and facilitate the intra-Afghan dialogue.
Addressing the reconciliation council on Sunday, the president said the council meeting would continue and it had the authority to choose members of the peace negotiating team but those who propagated or opposed democracy, the government and achievements of people over the past 18 years would not be included in the team.
The government of Afghanistan has already shown its willingness towards durable peace in the country, and the national unity government leaders have time and again called upon Taliban to join the process and kept open the doors to them without any preconditions.
Therefore, a unified peace delegation and a single voice would represent all strata of the society for talks with Taliban. The people of Afghanistan are impatiently waiting for peace and security and want a permanent end to the long conflict and chaos in their country through an Afghan led dialogue.
