KABUL: The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Thursday underlined the importance of an orderly process leading up to the announcement of the final presidential election results.
The UN mission said it continued to stress the equal importance of national cohesion in the days ahead, calling the election process a joint responsibility of all stakeholders, including the electoral bodies and the candidates, as well as media and civil society.
The UN also stressed the importance of any challenge made to the final results remaining consistent with the country’s regulations and conducted in the interest of stability and cohesion, and in accordance with the constitutional order.
In line with the mandate conferred on it by the Security Council, UNAMA said, it had provided support to the electoral authorities and their work, and would continue to do so in the period ahead.
In keeping with its mandate to advise the electoral authorities, UNAMA said it had maintained strict impartiality in its respect for Afghanistan’s election law and efforts to fight fraud.
About concerns voiced by candidates and their supporters following the announcement of the final results, UNAMA said it would continue supporting the people and institutions of Afghanistan.
It vowed support for all political parties, providing impartial and expert advice to encourage the electoral management bodies to address the candidates’ desire for clarity on decisions taken on audits and recounts.
While stressing respect for Afghanistan’s diversity and those who turned out to vote despite security constraints, UNAMA said it was ready to work with the future administration.
