President Ghani, US envoy discuss peace process

KABUL: The President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, met with Dr. Zalmai Khalilzad, Special Representative of US for Afghan reconciliation at the presidential palace yesterday.
 
During the meeting, which was attended by the Vice Presidents, the National Security Adviser and the President’s High Representative for Economic Development, Trade and Poverty Reduction, the two sides discussed the next steps in the peace process, the presidential statement added.
They stressed the need for a ceasefire or a reduction in violence before direct talks could begin.
 
Dr. Zalmai Khalilzad, the US State Department’s special envoy for Afghanistan’s peace process, expressed readiness to raise the issue with the Taliban, according to statement.
 
The release of Taliban prisoners was also discussed, with the Afghan government and the Taliban agreeing on clear and reasonable mechanisms to be adopted by both sides’ technical teams and accepted by both sides, the statement added.
