FM Atmar, Iranian counterpart talk border incident

KABUL: Acting Foreign Minister Hanif Atmar and his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif spoke over the phone the other day and two sides have conferred on the ways of cooperation on addressing the alleged drowning of of Afghan migrants.
FM Atmar informed Zarif over that a high-level Afghan delegation had conducted an investigation on the scene of the incident in western Herat province.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), Iran’s Zarif assured FM
Atmar that an Iranian delegation would also join the probe to determine the real cause of the incident.
The two sides agreed on holding joint meetings in Mashhad and Herat City on the matter, which has drawn strong denunciation from the Afghan government and people.
Around 50 Afghans being smuggled into neighbouring Iran were arrested by Iranian guards and forced into a river between the two countries.
Some 25 of the migrants drowned or have been missing in the wake of torture at the hands of the Iranian guards, according to media outlets.
